Back in mid February, I met Leo on the corner of King and Victoria Street.
It was a cold and windy day. Leo was walking along the sidewalk, with his bicycle and had just left the Salvation Army Thrift Store across the street. When I asked him if he was willing to participate in my project, he willingly agreed and mentioned how it was the perfect timing, since he had just bought himself “new” clothing! He stated that he hadn’t slept in 4 days. When I asked him his name, he was a bit confused, due to lack of sleep. And then proceeded to tell me that people call him Leo or Josh.
From first impressions and through getting to know him, Leo has a radiant personality. His beautiful smile is contagious and he has a fun personality. He stated, “In order to have nice clean clothes, a home and food to eat you have to win Lotto 649, haha!”.
Since first meeting Leo, I’ve seen him a few times on his bicycle when driving through downtown Oshawa. I always notice him smiling as he’s riding his bicycle. Through the pain and trauma he has endured, he always manages to keep that beautiful smile on his face.
I’m fortunate that I was able to capture a quick shot of that smile to share with you.
If you see someone living on the streets, please don’t be afraid to say hello. Ask them how they’re doing and what it is they need. Always remember they are human too.
